Kayaking Boat Specifications

FAQ

Specifications & Features

We launched this vessel in 2017. It follows a classic Indonesian design. The boat has a solid ironwood hull and a teak superstructure. Together, they provide strength and a warm, traditional feel.

The vessel measures 28 metres LOA and has a 5-metre beam. Because of this, guests and crew can move easily around the decks and cabins.

The boat runs on a Mitsubishi 6D16 main engine. This reliable 6-cylinder marine diesel is widely used in working vessels across Indonesia. In addition, an Isuzu 4JJ1 3.0L auxiliary engine supports daily operations. This engine offers durable and fuel-efficient performance.

Electrical power comes from an Isuzu 22.5 kVA generator. At night, the boat switches to a quieter petrol genset. As a result, cabins stay cool while engine noise remains low at anchor.

Overall, the vessel cruises at around 8 knots. This speed suits steady and efficient travel through Komodo National Park.

Navigation & Communications

The boat uses modern navigation equipment for safe travel. This includes a Garmin GPS MAP 585, a compass, and a depth sounder. Together, these systems support accurate navigation in Komodo National Park.

For communication, we carry a fixed VHF radio on board. We also use handheld VHF radios for kayaks and the tender. In addition, the boat carries a satellite phone for emergencies outside normal signal coverage.

Safety Equipment

Safety guides every decision on board. The vessel carries a tender boat for transfers and support during activities.

A life raft rated for up to 25 people provides full evacuation capacity. The boat also carries 25 life vests, which exceeds the maximum capacity of 14 guests and 5 crew members.

For emergency signaling, the vessel carries an EPIRB. The depth sounder links directly to the GPS system. Two 85 kg anchors with an anchor winch ensure secure anchoring. Fire extinguishers are placed throughout the vessel and inside cabins.

Dining Area

The boat offers a comfortable dining and lounge area. Guests can relax here between paddling sessions.

On board, you will find a refrigerator and a water dispenser. A small pantry provides coffee and tea. Soft drinks, light snacks, and fresh fruit are available throughout the day.

Meals are prepared fresh on board. We serve Asian and Indonesian-style breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. These meals offer simple and satisfying fuel after time on the water.

Accommodation & Facilities

On the upper deck, two cabins each contain three single beds. These cabins receive natural light and offer easy access to open-air areas.

On the main deck, two larger cabins each feature four sturdy bunk beds. These cabins suit couples, friends, or small groups. The layout keeps gear organised and cabins cool.

The boat has four bathrooms and toilets. This setup provides enough capacity for guests and crew. Daily routines remain smooth, even on fully booked trips.

Additional Facilities

The upper deck includes a spacious balcony area. Guests can sit here and enjoy the breeze while watching the islands pass by.

On the same level, an open sundeck offers space to relax during the day. Above this, the top deck provides room for sunbathing, sunset watching, or stargazing at night.

Crew

The onboard crew includes the captain, mechanics, cooks, tender crew, housekeeping staff, and dedicated kayak and snorkel guides.

All vessel crew hold national maritime certifications for their roles. Kayak and snorkel guides hold international guiding certifications.

In addition, every crew member receives training in basic first aid and evacuation procedures. This ensures a clear and practiced response in case of an emergency.

Is Kayaking in Komodo difficult? I have never kayaked before

Sea kayaking in Komodo is a rewarding adventure that doesn’t require previous kayaking experience. Our tours cater to beginners and intermediate kayakers – our expert guides are always there to ensure your safety and enjoyment. We carefully select our route and locations to visit the calmest waters of the Komodo National Park. Under our proper guidance, even if you’ve never kayaked before, you can paddle through pristine seas, explore hidden coves, and take in the breathtaking natural beauty of the region with confidence and ease.

We also provide skilled Snorkeling guides and equipment on the boat, so if you chose to skip out on some paddling – you will still have a great time.

How do I get there?

Our Komodo Kayaking trips start and finish in Labuan Bajo, on Flores Island. The main access point is Komodo Airport (LBJ).

You can usually reach Labuan Bajo by air from:

  • Denpasar (Bali), around 70 to 90 minutes

  • Jakarta, around 2.5 to 3 hours

  • Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, depending on seasonal availability

Flight schedules can change by season. We recommend checking current routes before booking.

What can I expect to see during the trip?

You can expect to see Komodo dragons, which are the world’s largest lizards, in their natural habitat. Additionally, you’ll have the chance to explore pristine beaches, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, and witness breathtaking sunsets. Our team of trained local guides know the waters, the islands and even the stars…we do more than just paddle on the trip.

What should I bring with me on the Kayaking Boat?

Essentials include reef-safe sunscreen, water bottle, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, comfortable clothing, swimwear, a waterproof camera (or a waterproof bag for phone), and any necessary medications. We also suggest some watershoes or strapped sandals – we visit the beaches! It’s also recommended to bring a small amount of cash if you wish to purchase souvenirs from passing craftsmen, leave a gratuity or similar.

Do I need to be an experienced swimmer to join the trip?

No, you don’t need to be an experienced swimmer. Our tours offer activities suitable for all skill levels, including snorkeling in shallow areas. We provide both Personal Floatation Devices while Kayaking, but also have snorkeling gear and floatation devices more suited to snorkeling. If you just want to lay back and float in the water…we can help that too.

*Note- we also have lifejackets located throughout the boat and in each cabin.

Is it safe to encounter Komodo dragons during the trip?

Your safety is always our priority. Park rangers and our experienced guides accompany tours to ensure safe encounters with Komodo dragons. Groups are always kept small, and knowledge of the dragon’s behavior and habitat also assures safety. However, you must listen carefully to the directions given to you, follow the designated paths and be cautious.

Meal Options? Vegetarian, Gluten-Free, Halal...

Our crew and cooks are from a diverse culture and have many different and delicious meal options available. We can also address many food allergies. There are some specific requests that might not be able to be met – contact us with your questions or concerns before booking the trip. If we do not know of special requests at least 24 hours before departure – we may not be able to meet those needs.

Is there a minimum age requirement for the trip?

We do ask that our guests be over 12 years old. those under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a legal guardian. We do arrange special family-friendly trips several times a year – contact us for more details.

Are there any additional fees or permits required for visiting Komodo National Park?

Yes. There are entrance fees for the Komodo National Park. The price of these tickets depends on your nationality, the day of the week and can change without too much notice. We deeply apologize in advance…we know this is confusing and frustrating for you. We do our utmost to explain that a smoother and simpler system was in place. When you request a booking date – we will inform you of the planned ticket pricing for those dates.

Please note: If you are taking photos or videos professionally, you will be asked to pay an additional fee…and “content creators” can be considered professionals. If you wish to bring a drone – there is a separate fee for that permit. To arrange those permits will require at least 24 hours before departure.

We do include all the other fees in our trip price (ranger fees, port fees, local fees) in our prices.

Is there more to do than just Kayaking and see dragons?

We strongly encourage you do plan extra days! Flores is home to some of the most amazing sites, culture and scenery in Indonesia. We recommend at least 3 days more to visit the traditional Wae Rebo village in the forests, stopping by the heart of Manggarai Culture in Ruteng town – with terraced ricefields that rival Bali and a stay at the Ecocamp along the wild South Coast of Flores.
